A Life of Caring for Austin Families

Dr. Jennifer Mushtaler is a lifelong Texan, mother, wife, physician and community leader. She grew up across from NASA Johnson Space Center. Her father led design teams for mission control for the space shuttle arm, Hubble and the Mars rover. Her mother taught eighth grade math in public schools. Her whole community was tied together through pride in our national space program. Science, community and compassion are at Dr. Mushtaler’s core.
Dr. Mushtaler earned a Bachelor's of Science in Electrical Engineering, graduating Cum Laude, from The University of Texas through a combination of academic scholarships and co-op's with IBM. She went on to earn a medical doctorate from Southwestern Medical School Parkland and completed residency at The Tarrant County Hospitals Program. In 2010 she founded her own small business, Capital Ob/Gyn Associates of Texas, a comprehensive ob/gyn practice offering high risk obstetrical care and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. She managed all aspects of the business in addition to her clinical and on-call duties. Additionally, she served on a Central Texas Medicaid Advisory Committee for ten straight years and an HHS Commission for Ethics in Informed Consent appointed by Governor Abbott. She has been honored with Austin Best of the Best awards and Texas Monthly recognitions.
In the year 2017, her neighborhood was annexed into the City of Austin. She was elected to serve as President of the River Place HOA and Limited District. She subsequently went on to serve two terms on the city of Austin Planning Commission. One of her achievements was sending a recommendation with unanimous support to the city council to request a small area plan for the northwest region of the city which has experienced some of the highest population growth rates in an area designated nationally for wildfire risks.
Dr. Mushtaler was recruited by friends and neighbors to run for the Texas House. Her campaign represents a significant change for House District 47 and our state. As a state representative she would be one of fewer than five physicians serving in the legislature out of 180 officials and the only obstetrician gynecologist. Her private experience coupled with her work inside the insurance industry puts her in a uniquely qualified position to tackle health care at the state level. Health care accounts for billions in the state budget and goes from kitchen tables to C suites. She is an advocate for growth, technology and infrastructure. That includes addressing reform of the recapture legislation to equip our schools and students for success.
Jennifer is married to Trent Mushtaler. They have celebrated 26 years of marital “bliss”. They are proud parents of two rising young adults, both graduated from LISD Vandegrift High School.
